ABS - Product specifications, properties & common uses.

Full Name: Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene.

Basic Properties: Tough, Hard, impact-resistant & resistant to acid & alkaline chemicals. Usually opaque. ABS Is a good electrical insulator although violently flammable when exposed to high temperatures.

ABS - Properties & common uses.

Used to make light and rigid products usually via thermo forming. ABS is very common in the automotive industry, bumpers, shrouds, wheel covers, dash boards, and consoles are all generally made from this plastic. Its properties are stable over a wide range of temperatures and performs well in very low temperatures. It has excellent shock absorbing quality's and used in helmets, golf club heads, and many children's toys. Chemical resistance is good and its not affected by acid, alkaline or organic salts. It will be affected by aldehyde, ketone, ester and some chlorinated hydrocarbons.

The stiffness of ABS is less than that of PVC and it deteriorates very quickly in sunlight where black pigment additives have not been used. It welds and glues well and relatively good to machine.

Normally available in sheet form only, and used mainly at CV-IPF for repairs and product modifications.
